Marching Towards Disability Awareness – living with disability in a modern world

Racing hopeful, Nic Hamilton is one of a host of young people showing what it is like to live with a disability in the 21st Century.

Welcome to my maiden blog post on this, my shiny new website! Over the coming weeks and months, I hope to convert this rather empty area of “web real estate” (yes that is a genuine piece of e-jargon!) into a rich and landscaped area filled with thought-provoking, yet witty commentaries on whatever subject takes my fancy! So stay tuned and by all means feel free to voice any comments of your own. Away we go…

Disability in the 21st Century

This month promises a season of TV and radio documentaries from the BBC. which explores the sensitive issue of what it means to be disabled in the 21st Century. A snapshot of the proposed schedule looks impressive.

“Racing with the Hamiltons: Nic In The Driving Seat” is to be aired on BBC 1 on Tuesday 6 March and follows the younger brother of Lewis Hamilton as he bravely begins to forge his own motor racing career in one of the most competitive sports on the planet.

This is followed by “Letting Go” a documentary to be broadcast on Tuesday 13 March exploring the angst and fears shared by the mother of a 16 year old girl with downs syndrome who must one day lead an independent life.

The question of what it means to be disabled in the 21st Century and how disabled people identify themselves with modern day society is an important one. I would welcome any comments from readers, wishing to express their views on this topic. I would also strongly urge you to tune into this series of programmes by the BBC. I’m sure they will be  worth watching.
